1978年 群馬県高崎市生まれ

多摩美術大学 美術学部グラフィックデザイン学科卒業

 

ストリートアートとグラフィックデザインのバックグラウンドを持ち、

ライブペインティングや壁画制作を通じて独自の視覚言語を築いてきた。

80年代のMemphisデザインの影響を感じさせるリズミカルなパターンと、

ダイナミックな筆致を特徴とし、国内外の都市空間に数多くの大型壁画を制作。

 

2021年以降、キャンバスを支持体とする作品へとシフトし、静物画の形式を取りながらも、

リアルとアンリアルを交錯させた独自の表現を確立。

クラシックな静物画の構成を咀嚼しながら、物の認識の曖昧さや、静と動の対比を探求する。

特に、花瓶を中心に構成された画面には、顔のような形が浮かび上がり、

ポートレートの要素も内包する。さらに、現代的なモチーフを取り入れ、

背景に人の気配を感じさせる構成や、時間や重力、観る者の視点による解釈の揺らぎを生み出している。

 

壁画、キャンバス作品ともに、空間と対話しながら生まれる独自のリズムを持ち、観る者に自由な解釈を促す表現を追求。近年では、伝統的な絵画の枠を超え、異なる文化や時代の要素を交錯させることで、新たな視覚体験を提示している。

Yohta Matsuoka | Artist / Painter

 

Born in 1978 in Takasaki, Gunma, Japan.

Graduated from Tama Art University, Department of Graphic Design.

 

With a background in street art and graphic design, Matsuoka has developed a unique visual language through live painting and mural production. His work features rhythmic patterns reminiscent of 1980s Memphis design, combined with dynamic brushwork, resulting in numerous large-scale murals across urban spaces both in Japan and abroad.

 

Since 2021, he has shifted his focus to canvas-based works, establishing a distinctive approach that merges the format of still life painting with an interplay between the real and the unreal. While deconstructing the classical structure of still life, his work explores the ambiguity of object perception and the contrast between stillness and movement. A recurring motif is the vase, centrally positioned in a way that suggests the contours of a face, incorporating elements of portraiture. Additionally, his compositions integrate contemporary motifs and subtle indications of human presence, creating a sense of uncertainty in the viewer’s interpretation of time, gravity, and perspective.

 

Both in murals and canvas works, Matsuoka pursues an expressive style that interacts with space and invites open-ended interpretation. In recent years, he has expanded beyond the traditional boundaries of painting, weaving together elements from different cultures and eras to present new visual experiences.
